Outreach and Educational Efforts

The Directors and Staff of the Okmulgee County Conservation District strive to develop a communication with the citizens of Okmulgee County in order to better serve them and their conservation needs. We hold an annual locally led meeting, participate in additional public forums, set up displays at public events, conduct annual surveys, and publish quarterly newsletters. We conduct frequent educational presentations aimed at the youth. These presentations include our annual Natural Resource Days, take conservation education activities to local Girl Scout troups and local after school programs.

If you are interested in our outreach programs call the District office at 918-756-8111 for more information

Natural Resource Days

One of the grand heritiges of the Okmulgee County Conservation District is the Natural Resource Days they have provided to the fifth grade students of Okmulgee County. It is a day that they remember and talk about for years. For some it is their first opportunity to go fishing, for others it is that first impression and lasting lesson of natural resource conservation. It is an event whose reputation preceeds it. While the Natural Resource Day is an annual event, it takes four days over the course of a school year to reach all the students in the county. The Natural Resource Days are open to public, private and homeschooled students.

Educational Materials:  Kits and Trunks

*consumable materials in these kits must be replaced

The Okmulgee County Conservation District has various materials that are available to complement your environmental and conservation educational needs.  Some of our activities are fully stocked trunks that you may check out and use and some of them are activities that we will present to your group.  If you see an activity listed below that interests you, call OCCD to schedule your activity.  If you have an activity or topic in mind that you have an interest in, call OCCD and discuss your needs with the staff.  We may be able to develope an activity that will suit your needs.

Watershed Enviroscape:  This tabletop model of a community demonstrates how pollutants can end up in local streams and lakes and even in local water supply.  The Enviroscape is a hands on activity that draws the attention of adults and children alike and has a powerful impact on their view of water pollution.  (This wonderful EE tool was made possible to the Okmulgee County Community by grants from Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, Oklahoma Conservation Commission and the Okmulgee Service League.)

Oklahoma Plant Awareness Pocket Guide:  This crafty activity educates about certain plants in the eastern Oklahoma landscape that can cause injury or discomfort when encountered.  The participant creates a colorful and water proof take-away while learning about the plants.  This activity appeals to children and adults.   (Activity created by Rhnea Stoy, kit materials provided by OCCD)

Incredible Journey
: This trunk is an adventure into the life of a water molecule. It demonstrates a large variety of locations there water might be located. While this activity can be done indoors or out, it does require at least an open area of 30' x 30'. At the end of this activity, participants are the proud owners of a water bracelet.  (Activity taken from Project Wet, kit contents provided by OCCD)

Dip Nets, Waders:
OCCD has a set of 12 dip nets, 12 waders (thigh high) and 12 calf high waders available on loan for wetland, pond or creek exploration.  (Equipment provided by grant funds from Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality)

Dig It!: This trunk is modeled in the fashion of an archaeological dig.  In the trunk are 10 plastic shoeboxes of soil that contains hidden treasures representing many things that are hidden in the soil.  This activity can be done indoors or out.  (Activity created by Rhnea Stoy, Kit materials provided by OCCD)

Soil Testing: This kit contains everything necessary to test the ph of soil and test the N, P and K levels.

Soil Painting:  This kit is made up of the different soils from Oklahoma.  These soils, when processed and mixed with glue, become paint.
